Welcome to my series on how to Feminist. Nah I am kidding, this is a series on how I view things from a feminist perspective. This is going to be in English, as the occasional post on my blog will be, but in general my blog remains Dutch, for my trusted followers, of which I don't have much yet.
Today I want to ask your attention for my the first meninist comment I want to adress in this series, and this comment is called: But women do have equal rights in the west and women in the east have it worse and blah blah blah that's why feminism is not needed in western society, you womanhaters you, go make me a sandwich! *insert misuse of grammar and teenage lingo here*
Well first, no.
No to every fucking thing.
Especially the sandwich part. Make your own sandwich or starve.
I'm too busy coming for your privileges.
Women don't have equal rights. Sure, on paper they do: They have rights to housing, voting, and so on, but that's all there is to it. People, and with it, I mean a lot of men don't seem to think we have the right to: equal pay, do with our bodies as we please, be valued for the same things as men are valued for (in work and personal life, think for certain opinions for example), voice our own opinions and do it they way we please, certain forms of health care, not be abused or violated in any way, to be validated in society in every way shape or form, being treated with respect, and many more other things.
Than the whole west versus other countries thing, that is just derailing things. Just because there are problems over there, does not mean the problems over here should not be addressed, because there are still problems and the system is flawed. How about you let us work for equality every where? Or are you hanging on to your privileges and there for denying inequality?
Details matter, in these cases, and those details form the bigger picture. Women don't have equal rights if they can not walk the street without being harassed. They do not have equal rights when being harassed is viewed as being hit on (fyi if you harass people and view it that way, you are doing it wrong). Women don't have equal rights if their values are validated only for their silence and their ways to be polite. We don't have equal rights when we get slut shamed, victim blamed, tone policed, and so on, in any way possible. We don't have equal rights if a forward women is called a bitch, and a forward man is promoted, and if there is no equal reward for equal hard work. Women are not exposed to equal rights when they are told that their own bodies are not theirs but for men and babies. When they are shamed for having periods and not taken seriously because of it.
In a society that cater to men, as a men, you view to the man-lens often time and see not the wrong that is done. But put down the lens, and get a fucking regular binocular and than you can maybe make the wrongs right. Until you can, don't tell me what I do and do not experience, and do and do not have.
